하계종목
지금이야 개최 비용이 너무 올랐다는 비판을 받고 있어서 정식 종목 28개 + 개최국 선택 종목 5(±a)개로 규정해두었지만, IOC는 복수 도시 개최 허용, 대륙별 순환 개최 규칙 폐지, 개최국 추가 종목 제도 신설을 통해 하계올림픽에서 꾸준히 정식 종목을 추가하겠다는 포부를 보이고 있다. 2040년대까지 정식 종목 33개 + 개최국 선택 종목 7(±a)개로 늘려둘 것이라는 목표도 세워두었다. 또한 여성 종목이 부족하고 개최 비용 등 여러 문제를 감안해 2010년대부터 혼성 종목들을 추가하거나 남자만 있는 종목에 여자 경기도 신설 시키고 있다.
